Is it time for the Buffalo Bills to be taken seriously?

Yes, I am asking this question, seriously. Is the team that won 62 games over the last 10 years for real? The team with a 38% win pct since 2001, a playoff drought of 11 years, and in arguably one of the toughest divisions in the entire NFL.

After not only beating the Pats, 34-31 in the final tense seconds of their game on Sunday, but it was the way they did it. Coming back from a 21-0 deficit was incredible and everyone who watched the game was in awe at what they watched unfold.

Not only were the Bills unrelenting in playing hard, but they unnerved Tom Terrific into throwing 4 picks. Something he hadn’t done in a single game since 2006, and only 6 times in his illustrious 12 year career. Pretty amazing stuff.

And so there goes the 15 game winning streak against the lowly Buffalo Bills. One more monkey off the back of the Bills (the forgotten New York step-son).

The Bills have been an enjoyable surprise to the NFL this season, starting off 3-0. I will go on record saying that no one, nobody anywhere, thought the Bills would be 3-0 starting this season, especially with seeing the mighty Pats as game 3. Only 3 teams are undefeated in the NFL at this point, the Green Bay Packers, not surprised, the on the rise Detroit Lions, sort of a surprise. And then our lovable losers, the Buffalo Bills, when and how did this happen?

Last year, even though only winning 4 games, and starting the season 0-8, they played hard all year. I respected their play, they played like they had a chance to make the playoffs every week, and they didn’t lay down for anyone. They were competitive in 6 out of 12 of their losses, only losing by an average of 4.1 points in those games. They played the game the right way; they just didn’t have a whole lot of winning. So should we be all that surprised they are coming around?

They have a new swagger about them, with some pride and confidence flurrying about the team. They now know they can definitely play with the “big boys” in the NFL. Which in some ways, of course, puts more pressure on them, but I would think they should welcome it; it’s not something they have ever had to face in any recent history.

The Bills are a very good football team; I think they will only get better from this hot start. They can run the ball with the ageless Fred Jackson, as a team, ranking 4th in the league moving the ball on the ground. And they can put it in the air with Fitzpatrick, who is a very good QB, who finally is getting some looks from fans across the league. The guy last season was coming around, throwing 23 TDs and 3000 yards. Which of course makes them the double threat to score the ball, which is always tough to defend against.

The offensive weapons for Fitzpatrick to throw to have really stepped it up. With WRs Stevie Johnson (20 catches, 256 yards, 3 TDs), David Nelson (20 catches, 233 yards, 1 TD), and surprise red zone target, TE Scott Chandler (team leading 4 TDs) making huge steps in offensive firepower, makes them tough to match up with.

The Bills have a lot to be stoked about so far in 2011. Historically since 1990, 76% of the teams that start 3-0 made the playoffs. Something the Bills would be excited to do. Next week playing the Bengals is huge, it is a perfect trap game for Buffalo after the colossal win against the Pats, they need to win and show they can handle the spotlight.

Football is exciting all over again in Buffalo; the New York step-son is getting some love. Mike Anthony from VegasTopDogs.com
