Hot and Cold Probable Starters Wednesday

By:     Date: May 18, 2010
Print Article

Below we will break down in detail two starting pitchers that have been on fire as well as one cold pitcher. We will also highlight the other pitchers worth mentioning on the current day. With our 10-4 MLB POD pending with Tuesday's result we'll look to Wednesday's hot starters of which there are five. Along with the pitchers who have ERA's under 3.00 in their last 5 we have just two pitchers wiht ERA's over 7.00. Hot Starters: Jon Garland (4-0, 33 IP, 1.09 ERA, 1.06 WHIP) We have not brought up Garland in any of these reports and we are way past due on that. Mainly because we thought Garland's efforts would come back down to earth, but they continue to actually improve as Garland has given up just 11 hits total in his last three starts combined. Garland will start on the road against the Dodgers and Ramon Ortiz. Garland should not be worried as LA's line up looks a little weaker without Andre Ethier who was having an MVP like year before going on the DL. In three career starts against the Dodgers going back to last year Garland has been solid going 19 IP, giving up 15 hits and 6 ER. Garland has been just as good on the road with a 2.74 ERA. There is good value in Garland as he is an under dog against a pitcher who really has not proven much. SD is 20-7 in their last 27 vs. a winning team, but they are also 4-11 in their last 15 vs. LA while LA is 39-13 in their last 52 as a home favorite -110 to -150. To me this one you leave alone. Doug Fister(2-0, 1.80 ERA, .91 WHIP) Fister is some what of an unkown around baseball, but he's been pitching extremely well this year. Fister a tall lanky 25 year old will not over power you and comes at you with a 85-90 mph fast ball and a low 80's change up. He can also throw the curve, but really needs solid defense behind him in order to continue this success. Fister won't be getting run support so he'll have to have one of his best games against the Blue Jays who are hitting the ball extremely well with a .325 average and 9.41 runs per 9 in their last 5 games. Blue Jays will send a lefty to the mound whom the Mariners are 0-5 in their last 5 vs. a LH starter. This is not a good spot for a pitcher who has really met his peak of the season in my opinion and is very hittable. Not saying he gets hit here, but I wouldn't be he doesn't! Honorable Mention L5 Starts Livan Hernandez (2-2, 33.1 IP, 2.16 ERA, 1.11 WHIP) Anibal Sanchez (2-1, 30.1 IP, 2.67 ERA, 1.32 whip) Jamie Garcia (3-2, 31.1 ip, 1.72 era, 1.18 WHIP) Cold Starters: Justin Masterson (0-3, 27 IP, 7.33 ERA, 2.00 WHIP) Masterson has been a disappointment for the Indians, there is no way around it. Masterson has been just really bad, but on a bright note he has had success against the Royals, and pitching at home where he will be on Wednesday. Also add in that he will face Gil Meche and you may see an upset here tomorrow. Meche and the Royals are 7-20 in his last 27 starts as well as 3-13 in his last 16 on 4 days rest. This does not look food for the Royals could the over be a possibility here? Again I'd rather skip the game too many questions and I wouldn't be surprised if either team won. Ice Cold: Greg Smith (0-1, 22 IP, 6.95 era, 2.23 WHIP)
