If you’re an avid sports gambler in seek of a summer getaway, perhaps you want to consider Delaware as your destination.
While the state doesn’t boast much in the way of breath-taking attractions or tourist traps, it now allows sports gaming after passing the much-ballyhooed bill Thursday afternoon. Gov. Jack Markell made it official by signing the bill at Delaware Park.
"This is an outstanding facility that will be even more attractive to customers," Markell told reporters.
Officials estimate it will take about three months to get the live sports betting running while it will take around six months to establish table games.
Ed Sutor, CEO of Dover Downs, is aiming to have betting up before the start of the football season, barring any interference from the National Football League. The NFL has been one of the biggest advocates against sports betting and could try to block implementation of sports betting through the court.
Delaware bettors will be able to parlay their plays but not bet single games. The Delaware Supreme Court hasn’t ruled on the legality of single-play wagers or table games. The Controller General's Office, Department of Finance and a representative of the casinos have 75 days to iron out regulations for the table games and the amount of revenue that will go to the state.
