Charlie Weis: Blue & Gold Or Black & Blue (Part 2)

By: Point Shaver Handzelek     Date: Nov 17, 2009
Print Article

What results or events have stirred up the echoes for Charlie's buyout & release? For starters, his team lost to Navy for the first time since 1964 and followed it up with a second consecutive home loss to the Midshipmen this year. His Irish finished last in Divison-I offense back in 2007. In 2007 & 2008, his Irish accumulated 15 total losses which was good for the highest 2-season loss total ever at ND. Last season, Weis and his troops lost for the first time at home to a 8-loss school with a lame-duck coach when they were upset by Syracuse 24-23 as 20-point favorites on Senior Day. In 2007, Charlie was responsible for ND's first 0-4 & 0-5 start to a season. That same season, his team finished with the worst record in Notre Dame history at 3-9. During the Weis era, he went a staggering 1-13 (.071) versus teams who finished in the Top 25. Now let's look at his opponents the past 2 seasons & where they finished according to the Sagarin rankings. Charlie played a very soft schedule playing 4 Top 25 schools, 9 ranked 26-50 & 12 schools ranked 51 or higher. Despite this slate, Weis has struggled. Against winning teams, Charlie went 8-20 for a winning percentage of .285 which isn't in the same ballpark as Lou Holtz who was 53-29 for .646 versus winners. Against the losers, Weis mastered them going 19-2 for a .905 winning percentage but still finished 2nd to Holtz who was 47-1 for a winning percentage of .979. Is Charlie Weis the offensive guru he was so-called labeled? In comparison since 2005, the Irish offense reached 50+ points not once. The Texas Longhorns did it 19 times. Does Weis earn his $4,200,000 a year salary? ND seems to think so. Pete Carroll (USC), Les Miles (LSU), Nick Saban (Alabama), Jim Tressel (Ohio State) and Urban Meyer (Florida) all make less than Charlie. How about explaining to Carroll who is a perfect 5-0 against the Irish with Weis why he makes a little less. Has Charlie recovered from the tough 34-27 loss to U.S.C. this year? A case in point is the lack of time management in that game when Weis left one timeout on the board while ND threw their last pass of the game on 3rd down from the three-yard line. What other factors enter in for Charlie's demise? One of the concerns of the Irish faithful has to be recruiting. It's hard to win the recruiting wars in states like California, Texas & Florida if your coach doesn't look fit and still talks closer to an NFL level. The average high school kid teetering ND with Florida or Texas will lean away from the Golden Dome. in today's world, you better look the part, be easy to relate to and have some believability. Notre Dame has lacked the serious big impact players that make up a killer defense due to lost recruits & higher academic standards. While ND upholds their high standards, lost are the many recruits that get snatched away by the current Top 10 schools. What are they set to take on now? They're getting ready for a BCS bowl birth and possible NCAA title. ND must find an acceptable academic standard if they are ever seriously thinking of competing at a consistent high level against the Florida's and Southern Cal's. You can't have your cake and eat it to. In my estimation, they haven't bent enough. Check back for Part 3 where we examine the future for Charlie Weis & Notre Dame. Mike Handzelek
