They were calling for Tyrone Willingham's hide after the 6-6 Irish season in 2004-05 and they got it. Enter in the Trenton, N.J. native, 1978 ND grad and bearer of four Super Bowl-champion rings blistering with confidence after 15 years (3 yrs. Giants, 3 yrs. Jets, 9 yrs. Patriots) in the NFL and recently coming off back-to-back championships as offensive coordinator for NE. He successfully developed offensive stars like Curtis Martin, Keyshawn Johnson, Ben Coates and of course, Tom Brady. He played a big part in guiding the Patriots offense to 20 consecutive home win that stretched over the 2003 and 2004 campaigns. With all these accolades, some said Weis (a respected disciple of Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick) was the savior to a ND program that would evolve into one of the most prolific offenses in the country under his tutelage. This was Weis's second appearance in the NCAA after starting his college coaching career back at South Carolina as a defensive end coach in 1987.
Charlie's first season lived up to the billing as he turned Notre Dame into the highest scoring Irish team in the modern era with a 38.18 point per game average that generated 489.09 yards per game. Brady Quinn, Jeff Samardzija and Anthony Fasano earned coveted awards under Weis. Charlie also became the first ND coach since Knute Rockne in 1918 to win his first two career games on the road.
After his 9-3 maiden voyage, all seemed strong with Weis as he proceeded to go 10-1 in 2006 and ready to pull an upset of U.S.C. in Pasadena. Well, the upset never happened and a loss to Ohio State 41-14 in a bowl game started a downward spiral. Since that U.S.C. loss in 2006, all the initial hype and hope that was built became hardly traceable with chunky Charlie having since compiled a 16-21 record after the Nov. 14th loss to Pittsburgh. Losing to Navy for the second time in a row at home has badly esculated talks of his dismissal and buyout at the conclusion of the 2009 season. Stay here for Part 2 where I will examine the pros and cons following the evolution of Weis during his Notre Dame tenure.
