The next chapter of the Brett Favre saga will be written on Saturday, when the quarterback makes his first start for the Jets in their preseason game against the Redskins.
Favre watched his new team defeat Cleveland 24-20 as a 4.5-point underdog in Week 1 of the preseason. There was a Brett behind center for the Jets through most of that game, but it was Brett Ratliff. Ratliff locked up the No. 3 quarterback job by passing for 252 yards with a pair of touchdowns against the Browns. Former Jets starter (and now backup to Favre) Kellen Clemens saw very little action, with 31 yards on four-of-six passing. Receiver David Clowney, who the Jets grabbed off waivers from Green Bay last season, had a standout game with TD receptions of 70 and 71 yards.
Favre will be starting Saturday night, but it's unknown how much he'll actually play, especially after he complained of "arm fatigue" in practice earlier in the week. New York head coach Eric Mangini likely wants to get Favre accustomed to the Jets' offense, and get him into game situations with receivers Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery, but not at the expense of his health. Favre may have been the NFL's ironman throughout his career, but he's still nearly 39 years old and will likely break down more quickly if pushed too hard.
On Saturday the Jets will be facing a Redskins squad that has gone 2-0 in the preseason so far, which includes their win over Indianapolis in the Hall of Fame Game. Last week Washington got past Buffalo 17-14 as a 6-point favorite. Washington's quarterbacks continued to play well in that win, as Jason Campbell completed 7-of-10 pass attempts for 71 yards, and Todd Collins completed 8-of-11 pass attempts for 77 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Washington had both Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts in the lineup last week after both backs skipped their opener. Portis ended up with seven carries for 18 yards, while Betts rushed for 41 yards on five carries while also catching a TD pass.
According to the trends the Jets should have this weekend's game in hand. In their past eight road preseason games the Redskins are a lame 2-6 ATS, while the Jets are an impressive 15-5 straight-up in their last 20 preseason games at home. The Jets are also the favorites this weekend by 3 points.
