AFC EAST PREDICTION

By:     Date: Aug 18, 2009
Print Article

Division Champions = New England Patriots Surprise Team = New York Jets New England Patriots (12-4) Patriots managed an 11-5 record without their MVP Quarterback last year. Tom Brady is back this year and the Patriots are the early favorites to take the AFC Championship with a sports betting line at +200. Biggest Strength: Offense and coaching. Bill Belichick is taking over the offensive play calling. With Tom Brady and some new targets to throw to I think they have an excellent shot at regaining their AFC East crown here this year. Julian Edelman a former QB at Kent St. drafted in the 7th round showed his stuff returning a kick in the 1st pre-season game and looked an awful like Wes Welker should get a shot to contribute this year. Obstacles To Overcome: There will be two obstacles for the Patriots this season. The first will be Tom Brady coming off his injury. This obstacle should be cured by the end of the preseason and Brady will be fine by the time the season starts. The second one is the loss of Josh McDaniels. Not much of an obstacle if you ask me when you replace him with Bill himself. However, it is something extra Bill will have to worry about and should have some kind of an impact. When To Bet: Well early on you are going to see this team as clear favorites, but you won't see the average 13.5 point spread that they were in 2007. Expect them to reach that mark by the end of the season. The key is taking them early and often in my opinion. New York Jets (9-7) The Jets will start their rookie QB Mark Sanchez and miss the playoffs again this year. They will finish with a winning record for the 2nd straight year, but miss the playoffs due to the competition in the AFC. I expect Sanchez to play efficient ball rival to what Joe Flaco put up for Rex Ryan in Baltimore last year, but in the end it won't be enough. Biggest Strength: The defense and the running game. They are blocked by 4 former division 1 offensive lineman and have a solid trio of runners in Thomas Jones, Leon Washington, and rookie Shonn Greene out of Iowa. There is no doubt running the ball will be the strength of this team, but their defense will have to be just as good if this team has any shot at making the playoffs. Obstacles To Overcome: Their passing game did not get any better when they lost Brett Favre and Coles in the off season. However, it won't be hard for Sanchez to reduce the number of turnovers the Jets had last year if he plays with poise. Rex Ryan a first year head coach will also be an obstacle or challenge as this is his first time around as a head coach. When To Bet: For NFL betting tips on the Jets I think you will find great value with them because they will end up starting a rookie QB and will have a solid defense. Much was true with the Ravens last year who were under valued all year long and finished 13-6 SU and 14-5 ATS. Miami Dolphins - 2009 Prediction (6-10) The Dolphins will try to repeat as AFC East champions but I fear it might be tough to do this year. The wildcat was the signature of the Dolphins last year when they picked apart the Patriots in week 3 winning 38-13. However, many defenses will be caught up with the strategy and it will be the challenge of keeping the opposing teams off guard. Biggest Strength: Running game was their strength last year and it looks like they still have more in store for the wild cat offense when they drafted QB Pat White out of West Virginia. However, the wild cat spread like wild fire around the league last year so I don't expect it to be effective much longer. Obstacles To Overcome: 1-15 to 11-5 with the comeback player in Chad Pennington last year. The Dolphins in 2009 will face the toughest schedule in the NFL. Last year the Dolphins faced a total of 4 teams with winning records in the previous year. They will likely fall under the pressure of being the rags to riches team not able to keep up with the attention. When To Bet: Against! Bet against the Dolphins this year especially early when Vegas still thinks this team is good. They open up at Atlanta, Indianapolis, at Sand Diego where I fear they will come away 0-3 SU and ATS. Buffalo Bills (6-10) The Bills started 4-0 and saw their season come crashing down when they finished 3-9. I don't see much of an improvement this year despite their free agency signing of Terrel Owens. Biggest Strength: Offense is the strength of the time if they are to win. With the addition of Owens Trent Edwards arguably has the best 1,2 punch in the AFC East with Owens and Evans. It's always risky when a strength can become a weakness as Owens is a huge risk and you may see him unhappy again before long when he does not get the ball. Obstacles To Overcome: Bills have the 6th toughest schedule in 2009 and close the year with the Patriots at home, at the Falcons and at home vs. the Colts to try to make the playoffs is a tough goal, but I wouldn't be shocked as Owens could play a key part here in a team that just went under the water last year. When To Bet: Get ready for the T.O. show pay close attention early to how he reacts with Trent Edwards and being the #2 WR on the team as Lee Evans has clearly passed Owens and has an established relationship with Edwards. If Owens has grown up a little bit you may see a dynamic offense with Marshawn Lynch in the backfield.
