2010 AL East Odds and Predictions

By: Jimmy Boyd     Date: Feb 22, 2010
Print Article

The American League East figures to be as tough a division as there is in baseball again in 2010 with the New York Yankees starting their quest for back-to-back championships and the Boston Red Sox looking to dethrone them. Below, we have rendered how we see the division playing out this season along with each team’s MLB betting odds associated with winning the World Series.

1st Place: New York Yankees +350 to win 2010 World Series – New York paid big money for C.C. Sabathia and A.J. Burnett last season and it paid off. Now the Yankees add more quality depth with the addition of Javier Vazquez. The Yankees may not have quite as much starting pitching depth as the Red Sox, but they more than make up for it at the plate with as talented an offensive lineup as there is in baseball. Bringing in Mark Teixeira certainly paid off and Alex Rodriguez finally came up big in the postseason.

2nd Place: Boston Red Sox +675 to win 2010 World Series – The Red Sox have the most coveted starting rotation in baseball now that ace John Lackey comes over from the Angels to team with Jon Lester and Josh Beckett. The Sox have won 95 or more games each of the last three seasons so I have little doubt they won’t get there again. My question is if they will have enough fire power to win the whole thing? Losing Jason Bay certainly hurts and David Ortiz appears to be on the decline.

3rd Place: Tampa Bay Rays +1700 to win 2010 World Series - Last season, the Tampa Bay Rays weren’t able to rediscover the magic that took them to the World Series in 2008. They finished 19 games behind the Yankees and 11 games behind the Red Sox. There is no doubt that this is a team capable of winning 90 games, but will it be enough to get past the two aforementioned A.L. East giants? The MLB odds makers don’t think so. If the Rays are going to get it done, they’ll need a bounce back season from their starting rotation, which shined during their deep October run in 2008.

4th Place: Baltimore Orioles +7500 to win 2010 World Series – As if 2008 wasn’t brutal enough, when the Orioles won just 68 games, 2009 dealt the team an even worse hand. The Orioles finished just 64-98 last season to find the A.L. East basement, 11 games behind the fourth place Blue Jays. With Roy Halladay no longer in Toronto, we should see the Orioles emerge as the better of the two bottom feeders in what is widely regarded as baseball’s toughest division.

5th Place: Toronto Blue Jays +7500 to win 2010 World Series – Without ace Roy Halladay, and with a number of key pitchers not expected to be ready by Opening Day, wins may be tough to come by for the Blue Jays this season, especially since they don’t exactly have one of the most feared offenses in baseball. The Jays could use a big season from Vernon Wells in the worst way.
