2008-09 NHL Western Conference Spotlight team by Jeff H

By: Jeff Hochman     Date: Oct 7, 2008
Print Article

I am looking forward to another profitable NHL season. Last year we pretty much nailed both of our two spotlight NHL teams with the Colorado Avs and Washington Capitals. The Avs finished with 95 points and the Caps stunned all the books with 94 points, winning the Southeast Division.

The NHL season begins on October 4th, 2008. Nobody has won more in Hockey over the past 12 years fully documented. I finished #1 in 2002 (NSM) and #1 again in 2006 and 2007. Save $200 before October 4th. Today, we will take a look at our NHL Western Conference spotlight team for 2008-2009 and than next week at our Eastern Conf. spotlight team.

Why pay $799 when you get it for only $599? You get 7 months of my award-winning NHL selections for around $85 bucks per month! It's the biggest no brainer in the History of Mankind.

2008-09 NHL Western Conference Spotlight team: Chicago Blackhawks

The fans of the Chicago Blackhawks are in for treat this season as the Blackhawks are on the cusp of being very good. This team reminds me of the 2006 Buffalo Sabres which was built on speed, with a constant motion offense, and excellent goaltending.

Patrick Kane, who led rookies with 72 points (21 goals, 51 assists) in 82 games, is the first Blackhawks player to win the Calder Trophy (NHL's top rookie) since goalie Ed Belfour in 1990-91. He edged fellow linemate Jonathan Toews for the prestigious award. Toews led rookies with 24 goals despite missing more than a month with a knee injury.

Don't forget about the old veteran Martin Havlat. Havlat had 57 points in 56 games in 2006-07 but was less productive last season, playing only 33 games before undergoing his latest shoulder surgery. Head coach Denis Savard plans to break up the potent line of Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Patrick Sharp, with Toews now centering for Havlat. That's exactly what Savard should do and this will make them even better.

With the additions of Brian Campbell and Cristobal Huet, the most coveted defenseman and goalie in this year's bumper crop of talented, unrestricted free agents, anything but a playoff berth will be considered a disappointment.

Nikolai Khabibulin is the final year of his contract and will battle Huet for the starting job. Huet had one of the best runs late last year with the Washington Capitals. Very few teams have two really good goalies that are proven in this league like the Blackhawks. You might even see a two-goalie system which would be a good thing considering that Khabibulin will be playing for a new contract.

The 'Hawks gave it a run last season, but eventually fell three points shy of scoring their first playoff berth since 2002. This is a hungry team loaded with high-skilled and fast players on offense and defense.

Jeff's Projected 2008-09 record: 45-30-7 (97 points, 5th seed out West)
