This article will focus on the top teams in the NBA this season. There are six teams with a chance to take home the championship this year.

The team with the best chance this year to win the NBA championship is the defending champion LA.Lakers. The Lakers are loaded with talent once again. This year they have Ron Artest in the mix in a bold move to improve the team defensively. Departing is Trevor Ariza,a clutch player in last years post season run. While Ariza was a nice piece to last years team,Artest is a clear cut upgrade. Kobe Bryant will be responsible for the often volatile Artest. Bryant will be able to keep Artest composed at critical junctures of the game. The Lakers also have bright young center Andrew Bynum returning with another year of experience under his belt. This years team will be tough to beat and may very well be returning to the Finals to defend their crown.

In the Western Conference there are two other teams that can compete for the title this year.

The San Antonio Spurs have upgraded their roster with swing man Richard Jefferson. The Spurs were hurt big last year in the playoffs when shooting guard Manu Ginobli was unable to play. Tim Duncan played hurt as well, unable to log the long minutes he has in previous years. The Spurs had to rely on bright young point guard Tony Parker to score the majority of their points as well as play superb defense, just to give the Spurs a chance to win. This year things should be different as the Spurs have upgraded their bench and now have another viable option in R. Jefferson. If the Spurs can stay healthy they can once again be a supreme team in the West capable of putting together a run for the finals.

The Denver Nuggets are the only other team in the West that can get to the finals. This year they have the benefit of the whole year with court general Chauncey Billups. The Nuggets were a different team once they had a true point guard to run the team. Together with Carmelo Anthony and a gritty bunch of team oriented players the Nuggets can not only get to the Conference Finals, but win when they get there. With Coach Karl back for another year, this team will be motivated and play some very exciting games with their fast paced style.

In the Eastern Conference this years top team is the Boston Celtics. Last year Boston was unable to defend their championship. The Celtics were hurt by the season ending injury to future hall of fame forward Kevin Garnett. This year Garnett is back and playing like the top tier player he has been for many years. As an insurance policy the Celtics have acquired power forward Rasheed Wallace to give the team more size and depth. Wallace will benefit by playing with a team that has legitimate title hopes. Paul Pierce and Ray Allen are back for another season in their potential hall of fame careers. Look for the Celtics to run away with the Eastern Conference and be the team to beat in the East this year.

The Celtics will have only two teams that can really challenge them for Eastern Conference supremacy.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are the second best team in the East. Lebron James will once again look to carry the Cavs to the finals. This year he has Shaq to help him get there. Shaq displayed flashes of brilliance at times last year. This year he will give the Cavs some inside scoring and a presence in the paint. While the Cavs still have an under achieving bench, the only team they have severe match up problems against are the Orlando Magic. The Cavaliers were eliminated against the Magic last year. The only team to take the season series from them. Had they played anyone else last year we might have seen the big Lakers at Cavs final the country was pining for last year. The Cavs must avoid getting to absorbed with the distractions that will take place later in the season as Lebron James gets closer to free agency. They may still have problems with an Orlando team that is the only other team I think can win the title.

Orlando made a big splash in the off season with the acquisition of shooting forward Vince Carter. This move gives them a significant upgrade over the departed H. Turkolou. Orlando will be a major player this year,as they have plenty of depth and made most of their big post season run with out starting point guard Jameer Nelson. The injury never appeared to slow the Magic down and Nelson made it back in time for the finals. This year Dwight Howard has another year under his belt and appears to be unstoppable in the paint. This team will be exciting to watch and can make it back to the finals if they can stay healthy, share the ball and continue to grow as a team.

It should be another stellar year in the NBA. The Lakers may very well be defending their title when the spring rolls around. Any team that comes out of the East will make it another exciting final. Enjoy the season and all the big story lines to come.

Last year in the NBA Rob Vinciletti enjoyed another fine season handicapping both NBA and College hoops cashing many top plays including both the Regular season and Playoff game of the year plays for the second year in a row. In the NBA Rob had over 70 units of profits. College hoops was solid as well picking up nearly 40 units on the season.
